Frodo, Sam and Pippin meet Gildor Inglorion and his company of Elves, as they pass through the Shire. Having recognized Frodo, for he knew Bilbo, and impressed by his knowledge of the ancient tongue, Gildor names him "Elf-friend" and invites the Hobbits to spend the night at the Elves' camp.
