mordred rides through the wood
How everyone thinks Mordred is a villain is a mystery to you. You've known him since you were both children, and in all your years of time together, you still can't work it out. For one thing, Mordred is the most chivalrous, most kind boy you know. He's definitely better than Lancelot. The guy's chased the queen for years now...and the woman's married!
And even though Mordred uses sarcasm and a rather biting attitude as a shield so no one can hurt him like his father and mother, you know the real him. The one he won't show anyone but you.
It breaks your heart to see the scars on his arms, the bruises. The abuse he put up with under the care of King Lot. It's a wonder that he stayed in Orkney as long as he did with everyone trying to beat the heck out of him. In fact, you suspect that he stayed because of you, although you would have left with him in a heartbeat.
So when you learn that Mordred's leaving the court, you shout in Arthur's face that all Mordred wants is to be loved and accepted by his father before barreling out of the castle with a bag and sword to find Mordred.
You catch him just as he's mounting his horse.
"Mordred! Wait!"
He turns around. "What?"
"I'm coming with you!" You grab Lancelot's horse by the bridle and drag her away. She follows you obediently.
"Hey!" Lancelot yelps.
You roll your eyes and hurry over to the only person in the world that matters. "I'm with you every step of the way, Mordred." No matter what. You know that, right."
"You've built a life for yourself." Mordred says. "A life I don't want to take away from you."
"YOU are my life." You grab his hand. "You're worth ten times more than this stupid kingdom. And if your father won't acknowledge it, then, hey, that's on him. I value you and I'll go to the ends of the earth with you."
Mordred smiles, a rarity with him. "You mean that?"
"I mean that more than I mean anything."
Mordred nods and holds out a hand. With a smile, you swing up onto your stolen horse and together you ride away into the unknown.
