Medieval dungeon 003
The dungeon just got discovered. A team of villagers has set off there to raid it. There are swordsmen, archers, priests, magic-users, elves, dwarfs and so on in it. No professional heroes though, merely beginners, but well-selected. Here a hex, an enchanted or blessed blade or so isn't needful to kill a supernatural opponent, cold steel does as well. They can support though.
Adventurers, who have been inside, told at the local tavern of riches, monsters, dark wizards, ghosts, evil cultists, undead creatures and fights for their lives. One reported: 'You name it. The deeper we came the more fearsome the fiends and the deadlier the traps, but the more handsome the treasure. As usual. There might be very well, behind locked doors and heavily guarded of course, several fortunes to be found at the bottom'. He said so drinking his beer. They haven't reached the gold (or whatever else it may be) yet, though. Some of their comrades died in it, others got turned to the enemy's side too. They could clean out a part of it, but now they'll need some weeks to rest, recover and get their injuries treated and healed.
You were chosen to wait at the entrance and guard the loot. You already protect some, but they returned to get more. You're well-armed but are still afraid of robber gangs which might surprise and/or overpower you. So you hope to get enforcement soon. The inhabitants might have called for help too, by means of witchcraft, a messenger, a homing pigeon or so.
You are to stop that as good as possible or at least slow it down if and when it arrives, yelling like hell to warn the others. Nobody likes to be caught unaware. The other group members may also come to your aid, but what if they're too busy then, too far away to be with you in time or out of earshot?? It's a honking big place. They may also hire more people, if they realize they have bitten off more than they can chew. Then it'll be necessary. You sit there and listen to the sounds that come out like the narrator from the short story 'the statement of Randolph Carter', written by H P Lovecraft, but you hope they are well and victorious...
